The foreign exchange demand went digital on Easter week

04 • 04 • 2018

  • The foreign exchange orders with delivery service have increased by almost 40 % compared with 2017 Easter week.
  • The Pound Sterling was the most requested currency via internet during this holiday.

Salamanca, 04 April 2018 Global Exchange, the multinational company specialized in offering foreign exchange services at international airports and other major tourist destinations, has seen an increase on online currency exchange orders during last holiday. More specifically, in 2018 Easter week the number of foreign exchange transactions grew by 40 % in comparison with the same period of the previous year.

By analysing the currencies bought online during Easter week, we can see that the Pound Sterling tops the list, followed by the US dollar, the Czech koruna, the Mexican peso and the Polish zloty. This ranking seems to indicate that, outside the eurozone, the United Kingdom was the preferred destination for Spanish travellers on Easter week. In fact, Spanish tourists tend to travel to close destinations within the European continent, among which we can also point out Poland and Czech Republic according to the online currency demand. Moreover, we have also noticed that there is an important demand of currency from destinations further away, such as the Mexican peso or the dollar. This last currency is not only requested by tourists travelling to the U.S., it is also used as reference currency in many countries like Argentina or Venezuela.

Change in Consumers’ habits

Tourists know and trust the foreign exchange service in airports, and we are also seeing a rise in street branches in important cities. However, the trend moves towards online transactions, because travellers plan their currency exchange in the same way as the rest of the trip, in advance. And now, the option of requesting the currency exchange online, same as the rest of the trip, is in line with a deeper transformation process in the Spanish consumers’ habits due to the rise of e-commerce.
